My MS thesis project is being conducted through collaboration between Materials Science and Engineering Dept. and the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dept. The project involves high strain rate testing of High Strength Low Alloy Steel -65 (HSLA-65) using Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar. This grade of HSLA steel will be used to build naval ships using friction stir welding. Hence the experiments are to be carried out relevant to friction stir welding conditions. Additional experiments to obtain the frictional coefficient between HSLA-65 steel and the friction stir welding tool have to be set up. The project also involves high strain rate testing of 5000 series Aluminum alloy and nano crystalline Aluminum alloy which are also to be used for building naval ships. These experiments are being conducted in collaboration with Prof. Vikas Prakash in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at CWRU.
