The effects of service exposure and accelerated heat treatments on the sensitization of 5XXX aluminum alloys is being investigated with TEM and a number of different mechanical tests. Both quasi-static tension and fracture toughness tests are being conducted on as-received and sensitized materials in order to document the effects of such changes in microstructure on the performance of such widely used materials. Interaction with other group members that are investigating the high strain rate response is ongoing. Extensive interactions with other group members regarding scanning electron microscopy examinations of fracture surfaces of metallic glasses, structural steels, and biomedical materials also continues.
