The effects of systematic changes in alloy chemistry on the strength and toughness of a variety of Fe-based bulk metallic glasses is being determined. It has been shown in previous work at Univ. Virginia that changing the poisson ratio via changes in alloy chemistry is effective in enhancing the compressive ductility, while related work at CWRU has shown similar benefits of changing the poisson ratio on increasing the fracture toughness. These concepts are being explored to enhance the toughness of Fe-based bulk metallic glasses through a collaborative effort with University of Virginia.
